What To Expect When Buying An Engagement Ring

11th Dec 2018

Organising a memorable proposal along with finding the perfect engagement ring can always be a difficult task. With the internet bombarded with endless information and advice on the topic, it can be easy to get overwhelmed by it all. We’ve formulated a short list of things to expect when planning the perfect wedding proposal for your partner.

 1. Listen out for clues

It’s always important to listen to your partner, however, this becomes extremely important around the time of the proposal. If a proposal’s been in the books for awhile now, it’s safe to assume that your partner will be dropping a lot of hints. When a ring size or style is ever mentioned, be sure to note down the details as this will come in super helpful when it comes a time in to choosing their engagement.

2. Asking for permission

If you or your partner have traditional values, asking your partner’s parents for permission is inevitable. Whether you’ve known the parents for 6 months or 6 years, the process of asking for your partner’s parents permission to marry them isn’t particularly comfortable. Regardless, whether this act is important to you or your partner, it needs to be done. The best way to go about this is to just do it. Not only will toughing it allow you to have your soon to be parents-in-laws’ blessing, but they’ll also respect you a lot more for it.

3. Ask the more experienced

Talking to people who have already gone through what you are going through is always a good idea. Gaining insight as to what other people have experienced and how they handled it will help reassure that what you’re doing and how you’re feeling is completely valid. Not only that, but they’ve been through it before and would be more than willing to offer some helpful advice and tips on proposing to your partner.

 4. Talk to their family and friends

Make sure you make the right decisions by asking the people that know her just as well, if not more than you do. Despite the annual presents, you exchange for Valentine’s day, your anniversary and their birthday, getting your partner an engagement ring is a whole other level. It would be a good idea to consult someone close to your partner and have them come along for a second opinion when trying to find their ring.

5. Your ideal ring may not be theirs

It’s important to remember that, at the end of the day, the ring is for them. While you may have a particular style in mind for them, or you have a mentality that the bigger the ring, the better, there’s a high chance that they already have a dream ring style in mind. This is where listening to your partner comes in. Even if you only have a brief idea of what they’re after, it’s a good start. Keep in mind that (finger crossed) when they say yes, they’ll be the one wearing the ring, and not you.

Tip: Choose a basic design first, then when she says yes, bring her in store to choose her desired ring design. We, here at SH Jewellery, offer that to a lot of customers who were confused at first.

 6. Know the basics

Learning and understanding the 4Cs will come in more helpful than you think. Think about it, if you’re going to be lashing out a couple of thousands on a ring, you’d like to know that what you’re deciding to purchase is worth it. Knowing the basics is always a good idea. Particularly when this knowledge is easily transferable to when you’re looking for their wedding ring.

7. Know your limits

The harsh reality of it is that regardless of your budget, buying a quality engagement ring will be expensive. However, finding your partner their perfect ring doesn’t have to break your bank. In saying this, it’s important to set your maximum budget before you start looking at rings. It’s a good idea to let the jeweller know your budget prior to looking at any rings. If you’re looking at rings that won’t allow you to go out for dinner for 3 years, then you probably need to reconsider your options.

 8. Planning is harder than proposing

Don’t underestimate the amount of time and effort required when planning the actual proposal. It’s important to give yourself enough time to plan everything to their exact details, from deciding the time, place, what you’re going to say and how you’re going to give them their engagement ring. After going through all this effort to find them their perfect engagement ring, it’d be a shame to lack in the actual proposal.
