Questions To Ask Your Jeweller Before Making A Purchase

There is already a multiple of things to consider when thinking about proposing to someone. With already plenty going on, knowing and finding the time to research every detail about the engagement ring just isn’t ideal.

Purchasing an engagement ring, or any sentimental piece of jewellery is no small feat. Ensuring that you know exactly what to ask your jeweller is important as it saves you the risk of coming back with questions or details that could have been mentioned the first time around.

At SH Jewellery, our friendly staff specialise in all things jewellery and have superior knowledge and insight when it comes to partners buying their partner an engagement ring. This short list of things to be mindful of aims to give you a brief idea as to what questions to ask your jeweller before buying anything to ensure that you and your partner are 100% satisfied with your purchase.

1. To Engrave or Not To Engrave?

If you ever want to make anything that’s more personalised, engraving is always a good way to go. Engraving a ring with a subtle quote, date or name is a sweet idea to really display your effort and thoughtfulness. Asking your jeweller whether they provide this service also makes your job easier. Instead of getting your ring taken in it to be engraved externally, often, your jeweller will just engrave it for you and then hang onto the ring until you’re ready to pop the big question.

2. Know your sizing

While knowing your partner’s ring size in advance always helps, for those who are unsure it’s best to go slightly larger than smaller. That being said, asking your jeweller whether they’re able to do resizing is important as if the ring doesn’t fit, they should be able to amend that for you.

3. Always ask about insurance

Like any expensive investment, it’s important to take the necessary precautions in the case something were to go wrong. That’s when asking your jeweller about insurance comes in. An engagement ring is meant to last you a lifetime, and if anything were to happen - loss or damage - it’s best to have spoken to your jeweller about insuring your ring against any damage, and what you’re entitled to if that were the case.

4. Maintenance

With anything special or expensive, it’s important to perform regular maintenance checks to ensure that everything is in tip-top shape. That being said, it’s always a good idea to check first with the jeweller what that regular maintenance may look like. For instance, the jeweller may advise you to get your ring cleaned every three months, where others may recommend an annual clean.

5. The source of the diamond

While this question isn’t entirely necessary, it’s always a good idea to see where the diamonds you’re purchasing are from. By asking your jeweller this question, they’ll usually be able to show you a grading report so you know all about the quality of your ring.

6. Figure out payment options

Purchasing an engagement ring is probably one of the most important purchases you’ll make in your life. While it’s important to save up money before making your purchase, having a budget planned beforehand is the best way to go about it. With Afterpay, Zippay and other payment plans, it’s good to speak to your jeweller about possible payment options. Despite having saved up for this ring, asking about flexible finance options, as well as layby plans, is a good contingency in case you have something come up or if you’re in sudden need of another payment option.

7. Always know the Return & Exchange policy

Knowing whether the ring you’ve just bought or are about to buy has a Return and Exchange Policy is probably one of the more important questions on this list. Similar to insuring the ring, since you’ve invested into an expensive piece of jewellery, it’s best to know what your options are if anything were to happen to the ring.

Having this conversation with your jeweller is heavily recommended as it not only puts some of the questions you may have for them at ease, but also reinstates the quality, policies and details that come with the ring. Knowing more about what you’re buying is never a bad thing. The more questions you have, the better chance you have in ensuring that the ring is perfect for the most important question of them all - the proposal!
